The Peninsula Walk

A route you drive or walk yourself, in your own car, on your own day.

Eleven Kildare locations inside the old city, on foot. The church where Pope finds the wall, the dungeon under the Exchange, the pier, and the tavern dressed as somebody else's club.

    The Charleston Museum

    The scene

Where John B and Big John go looking in season three.

The Charleston Museum calls itself America's first museum and was founded in 1773. It plays itself, which is rare enough in this show to be worth saying: the building on screen is the building, doing its actual job.

    360 Meeting St, Charleston, SC

    Parking
Museum garage across Meeting St; metered street

    Charleston Gaillard Center

    The scene

The law library Sarah and John B search for the Denmark Tanny records.

The Gaillard is Charleston's concert hall and it plays a university library in Chapel Hill. The interior is the part that reads on screen; the outside is unmistakably a modern performing arts centre and is not what you see.

    95 Calhoun St, Charleston, SC

Garage on Calhoun St; metered street

    About 15 minutes here

    Stop 03 · Outer Banks

    Charleston Maritime Center

    The scene

The pier where John B and Sarah kiss in the rain, coming back from the mainland.

Season one, episode four. They come back on the Carolina Belle and the kiss is filmed on the Maritime Center pier, which is a working small boat harbour on the Cooper River.

    10 Wharfside St, Charleston, SC

    Parking
Maritime Center lot; Aquarium garage nearby
    Allow
    About 20 minutes here

    Stop 04 · Outer Banks

    Big John's Tavern

    The scene

Dressed as the Piety Street Club, with East Bay Street standing in for New Orleans.

Season five, episode seven. Ellie's High House is on the same stretch of East Bay Street, which is how one block plays a New Orleans neighbourhood. The bar itself has been open since 1954 and was not redressed inside.

251 E Bay St, Charleston, SC

    Parking
    Metered E Bay; Cumberland garage
    Allow
    About 45 minutes here

    Circular Congregational Church

    The scene

The outside of the church Pope finds the way into.

Season four, episode five. This is the exterior and the graveyard; the aisle and the altar under it are the Unitarian Church a few streets away. Two buildings playing one church is ordinary practice, and it is why the churchyard you see outside does not match the inside.

    150 Meeting St, Charleston, SC

    Parking
    Metered Meeting St; Cumberland garage
    Allow
    About 20 minutes here

    Ben Silver

    The scene

Where John B and Sarah go in for the wardrobe upgrade before Chapel Hill.

Ben Silver is a real King Street clothier and has been since 1967. The scene is a shopping montage rather than a plot point, which is why it is a stop you look at rather than one you spend time on.

    149 King St, Charleston, SC

    Parking
Metered King St; Cumberland or Concord garage
    Allow
    About 20 minutes here

    Stop 07 · Outer Banks

    The Unitarian Church

    The scene

The church interior, where Pope finds the way into the catacombs under the altar.

Season four, episode five. The exterior of the church in that sequence is Circular Congregational, a few streets away; the inside is this one. Two buildings playing one church is ordinary practice and it is why the graveyard you see outside does not match the aisle you see inside.

    4 Archdale St, Charleston, SC

    Parking
    Metered Archdale/King; Queen St garage
    Allow
    About 20 minutes here

    Stop 08 · Outer Banks

    Washington Square

    The scene

Where Sarah and John B walk after coming off the ferry.

A small square behind City Hall, half a block off Broad Street. It is one of the quietest corners downtown and takes about ten minutes, which is the whole reason it works as a walking-and-talking shot.

    Washington Square, Charleston, SC

    Parking
Metered street; Cumberland garage five minutes away
    Allow
    About 10 minutes here

The Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon

    The scene

The catacombs and the crypt, where Sarah and Pope get locked in as the water rises.

Season four, episode five. The Provost Dungeon under the Old Exchange is the brick cellar the treasure hunt ends up in, and it is open to visitors as a museum rather than as a set.

122 E Bay St, Charleston, SC

    Parking
    Metered E Bay; Cumberland garage
    Allow
    About 60 minutes here

    Stop 10 · Outer Banks

    Waterfront Park

    The scene

Where Pope and Cleo talk, in season three, episode three.

Joe Riley Waterfront Park runs along the Cooper River with the pineapple fountain at one end and the pier at the other. The conversation is a quiet two-hander, so the park is the location rather than a backdrop to anything.

    Waterfront Park, Charleston, SC

    Parking
Cumberland or Concord garage; metered E Bay
    Allow
    About 20 minutes here

    Stop 11 · Outer BanksAdmission

    Edmondston-Alston House

    The scene

    Carla Limbrey's house.

The Edmondston-Alston House on East Battery plays Limbrey's. It is a house museum rather than a private home, so unlike most of the houses in this show you can go inside, and the piazza looking over the harbour is the view that gets used.

    21 E Battery, Charleston, SC

    Parking
Metered street on E Battery; Cumberland or Concord garage
    Allow
    About 60 minutes here
