Cistern Yard
The scene
The Assembly Benjamin Martin argues in front of, and loses.
Randolph Hall, at the head of the Cistern Yard, is where the General Assembly meets to vote on entering the war. The scenes are interiors, so what you are standing in front of is the building rather than the room: the College of Charleston still teaches in it, and the Cistern is the lawn its steps look onto.

Cypress Gardens
The scene
The militia camp in the swamp, and the last scenes of the film.
The blackwater and the cypress here stand in for the swamp the militia disappears into between raids, and the closing scenes were shot on the same water. It is the fifth major production to use these gardens; the flat-bottomed boat you paddle yourself is the same water at eye level.

- The paddle round the water trail takes about half an hour on its own. Boats depend on conditions, so a wet week can change the day.
